1) What inspired you to start running?
I started running in the mid-1980’s to improve my fitness level. I ran solo, I ran sporadically and was essentially a fair-weather runner of convenience, getting out when I pushed myself.
2) What led you to start running?
In 2010, I set myself a goal to run a half-marathon, but I knew my solo run routine wasn’t going to get me there. I recognized that I needed help and guidance to run over the winter and to increase my mileage. I joined the 10K Clinic at the Whitby Running Room, then progressed to the Half Marathon and completed my first half in May of 2011. I found friends, inspiration and motivation in group running, and the rest, as they say, is history – I have now completed 46 half-marathons and continue to complete them thanks to the support of my fabulous run tribe. I have also participated in many 5K and 10K races. I’m a proud parkrun supporter and love to participate and also volunteer in Ontario and Nova Scotia.
I am most proud of completing the training and running the Ottawa Full-Marathon. Not a small feat. I’m proud of how I have become so consistent with my running - there is nothing that stops me getting out year round!
3) Anything unique about your running journey?
After breaking my ankle (fibula) in December 2021 (Skiing!!), the journey back to running was way longer and slower than expected. I believe running made me mentally strong enough to deal with the situation. I had very few “down” moments, and was extra grateful for sunny days and my supportive family and friends. I proudly walked 5K races and walked parkrun. I completed physio, did my exercises and returned to running becoming just as strong as I was pre ankle break. The unplanned break from running demonstrated to me how important “movement” is to me. When I’m having a difficult run, I think back to that time and immediately perk up basking in the knowledge of what a magnificent machine our bodies are.During my break from running, I inadvertently started a 10,000 steps per day streak from walking so much. Currently, I have completed almost 1,200 consecutive days (over 3 years) - talk about consistent! It feels amazing to be moving consistently, and I am going to keep going with my streak until I absolutely cannot!
4) What advice would you give those beginner and intermediate level runners?
First off, get fitted for decent running shoes. When your body feels good, you are much more likely to run consistently! Second, it is all about the pace! Unless you are training for the Olympics, run at a pace that is enjoyable for you! Fast, slow, intervals…run what you enjoy! Have fun! Third, find your tribe! I run solo and also with friends. Both have a place in my life. The run community is very encouraging, supportive and wonderful!
5) What’s your favourite route that you have run a) in Durham and b) anywhere in the world
My favourite route to run in Durham is the Lake Pathway. Pick a distance and start to run! So scenic! One of the favourite places that I’ve run is Sydney, Australia. I ran a paved path that included running around the Sydney Opera House! How cool is that!
Sue is a positive influence and great ambassador for our sport. She is a regular with ParkRun and Whitby Running Room. She has completed 46 half marathons(!!!) and is currently on a streak of over 1200 days of taking 10,000 steps (!!!) - so inspirational!. She was kind enough to share her running journey with us....
